Prezi:
Present the interactive Prezi to the class, as you explain each topic (bubble) take any questions the students may have. After a bubble has been covered, ask the question at the bottom associated with that topic. Questions and their desired answers are as follows:
1. Can you think of any other function water has in an ecosystem? (not listed in bubble)
Answer: Water provides a home for many aquatic animals as well as shelter for amphibians at certain times.
2. How are nutrients transferred to the soil in an ecosystem?
Answer: When living organisms (plants, animals, etc) die, decomposers break down them down. After an organism is decomposed the nutrients that were in it are transferred back into the soil for other living creatures to absorb and use.
3. How does air pollution affect the ecosystem?
Answer: Three ways that air pollution affects an ecosystem are global warming, acid rain, and depletion of the ozone layer. Global warming is caused by gases being trapped in the earth's atmosphere and causes increase in climate temperature over time, this can melt bodies of water that were once frozen as well as force cold-loving animals out of there homes to seek cooler weather. Acid rain is caused by the accumulation of poisonous gases high in the atmosphere which are then blown by winds and washed down to earth in the rain; acid rain can damage forests and kill fish and other aquatic animals. The depletion of the ozone layer subjects us to more UV rays from the sun, causing problem for humans, animals, and plants.
4. Where do heat and light energy originate in the ecosystem? Hypothesize what would happen if the sun stopped radiating energy.
Answer: Heat and light energy in the ecosystem come from the sun and the radioactive energy it emits. Plants could not carry out photosynthesis, the earth would become to cold for anything to live on it.
5. If a fox eats meat but also eats berries and plants, what kind of consumer would you classify it as?
Answer: The fox would be considered a herbivore because a herbivore eats other consumers as well as producers.
6. What would happen if there were no decomposers in an ecosystem?
Answer: If there were no decomposers in an ecosystem the dead organisms would pile up and would take much longer to break down and on their own. The soil in the ecosystem might also lack nutrients because these dead organisms are not being broken down.
